Three major lunations are poised on the month’s power-points, bring forth the month’s archetypal force, while Mercury retrograde helps us reap their offering. For the Celts, the Pisces period of March is Celtic Hrethmonath, month of Hertha or Nerthus, related to Mother Earth, prosperity and happiness. Sun in the sign of the fish activates the healing axis of Pisces-Virgo, and the Virgin makes her statement literally from Day 1, at the Full Moon in Virgo. March is a study in impulse versus restraint. The cosmos is saying yes with Venus and Mercury entering spontaneous Aries on March 6, followed by the Sun on the Equinox on March 20. However, there is resistance as the Aries planets square Saturn on March 10, 13 and 29. Giant Jupiter turns retrograde on March 8 and the undercurrent of review and reconsideration grows stronger as Mercury begins its retrograde phase on March 22. Mars enters methodical Capricorn on March 17 and Venus sashays into earthy Taurus on March 30. It marked the beginning of a retreat practiced by women who would go into the woods and fast in preparation for the coming of Spring. Men were not allowed to take part in the ritual, which was connected to the coming agricultural season but also, on an esoteric level, with the need for purification of the physical realm (Virgo) in order to attend our soul (Pisces Sun). Removing one’s feminine self to the forest responds to the cyclical need to set limits on worldly interaction, symbolically invoking chastity in order to ground Pisces’ energy of grace. Despite the waning Moon phase, today offers a good window to decide and act on change, or even start something new, before Mercury enters pre-retrograde shadow on Thursday, March 8.
